This CD is excellent for beginners and intermediate drummers. An introductory lesson shows you how to play the basic sounds found on the djembe, and also advises good drum technique. This is followed by five African and South American rhythms. Each rhythm is taught using verbal instructions and rhythmical singing, illustrating right and left hand co-ordinates and timing. Each rhythm is then played, together with the variations, for you to play along with. To make sure you never get bored, variations are also included in the instructions. These variations invite free expression and intuitive style drumming for advanced skill. Originating from the Middle-east, Asia Minor and North Africa, the doumbek drum is one of the oldest instruments in the world. Originally made from clay, and fired in sand pits, the doumbek sings its name. Played with the fingers and a cupped hand, doumbeks create two specific sounds; a bass sounding like "doum" and a high pitch tone, sounding like "bek". Doumbeks are played in Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Morocco and most Arabian countries. They orchestrate melodious harmonies that inspire the seductive shimmy. The doumbek is drum is the belly dancer's rhythm maker, and her hip shaker.
